UPDATED: 10:05 am EST December 4, 2008

A man forced open a locked aviary at an Altamonte Springs pet store and stole a $600 bird, according to police.

The multi-colored Jenday Conure bird was taken at about 1:15 p.m. Nov. 8 from Petco, located at 375 E. Altamonte Drive.

Altamonte Springs police said surveillance video at the store shows what looks like a Hispanic male entering the closed aviary inside the store. After a short time, the individual exited the aviary and quickly left the store, police said.

The aviary is not accessible to the public, and has a locking door that was forced open by the thief, police said.

The bird thief was described as a Hispanic male, about 40 years old, 6 feet tall and about 200 pounds. He was wearing a black and white striped shirt and dark cargo shorts.

The bird is valued at $599.00.

Anyone with information about the theft is urged to call Crimeline at 800-423-TIPS.
