LEESBURG, Fla. -- A 24-year-old Leesburg man accused of killing his 82-year-old neighbor told Local 6 News on Monday that he "would never do anything to hurt that woman" during a jailhouse interview.
"This is killing me. It's eating me up inside because you know I love that lady. You know that I would never do anything to hurt that woman," said Dennis Scott.
Scott and Carvin Robinson, 19, were arrested on charges of first-degree murder, armed robbery and burglary to an occupied dwelling in the death of Maxine Myers, who was stabbed to death inside her Crest Avenue home, Leesburg police said.
"They both had knowledge of the crime that was not public knowledge, and only people or a person that had direct knowledge of it would have known," Leesburg police Capt. Ginny Padgett said.
"Did you have anything to do with her murder?" Local 6 News reporter Jessica Sanchez asked Scott.
"No," said Scott, who added that Myers was like a grandmother to him. "Every time I would see her, I'm waving at her with a smile on my face."
Scott has a criminal history that includes grand theft and parole violations.
"It's not on my body that it says I would go out there and kill somebody just to do it," Scott said. "That ain't me."
Myers was was found slain by Leesburg police at about 12:15 p.m. Sunday. Officers discovered Myers' body while performing a well-being check after receiving a call from her concerned daughter, who lives in Jacksonville, police said.
Jermain Greene, 18, was arrested Sunday night after being found at the Turtle Oaks Apartments inside Myers' vehicle, police said. There is no evidence showing that Greene was involved in Myers' death, Leesburg police said.
Robinson and Scott live on either side of Myers, who was a recent widow and had lived in the home for 49 years, Local 6 News reported.
Robinson, Scott and Greene were booked into Lake County Jail.
