ORLANDO, Fla. -- A prisoner who escaped from a hospital 35 years ago was arrested in Orange County Wednesday after authorities discovered that he worked for Florida Hospital.
Michael Rinehart, 58, who authorities said used the alias Harold Sexauer, was arrested after a tip was sent to the Orange County Sheriff's Office from the Department of Corrections cold case squad.
Rinehart was serving a five-year prison sentence in 1973 for grand theft in Hillsborough County. While in prison, he was transported to a hospital for an evaluation and escaped, Orange County sheriff's deputies said.
An investigation by Orange County sheriff's detectives showed Rinehart, using the Sexauer alias, was living in Orange County and working for Florida Hospital.
Detectives performed surveillance on Rinehart and confronted him outside his home on Wednesday. He denied any knowledge of the incident and had a Florida driver's license with the Sexauer name, deputies said.
Scars and physical trait's matched the description of Rinehart, so the man underwent fingerprint testing, which confirmed that he was Rinehart, deputies said.
It is not yet known in what capacity the man worked at Florida Hospital.
