DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- A man was arrested Tuesday night on charges of animal neglect in connection with a suspected dogfighting ring in Daytona Beach.
Heith Williams was arrested on 28 charges of animal neglect after 30 pit bulls, including 20 puppies, were taken from a Daytona Beach home Dec. 18.
According to Daytona Beach police, the dogs were discovered when animal control officers performed a well-being check on the animals at a house in the 200 block of Jefferson Street.
A person at the home called the owner of the dogs, which were locked in metal cages that were filled with feces.
Williams claimed ownership of the dogs and was issued a citation for exceeding the amount of animals allowed under city ordinance. An investigation led to further charges resulting in Williams' arrest.
A dog in one of the cages had what appeared to be bite marks consistent with dogfighting, Daytona Beach police said. Another female dog appeared to be extremely emaciated, and was caged with six puppies that were covered in feces, police said. Another dog was tethered with a logger chain, police said.
Boards beneath the kennels had two-inch gaps, causing the pit bulls' paws to get stuck, Daytona Beach police said.
No food or water was spotted with the dogs, many of which had open sores believed to be consistent with dogfighting.
All of the dogs were transported to the Flagler Humane Society for treatment and shelter.
