Former Firefighter Arrested In Stolen Foot Case

Woman Trains Cadaver Dogs

POSTED: Monday, January 26, 2009
UPDATED: 4:03 pm EST January 26, 2009

A former St. Lucie County firefighter has been arrested on charges that she took home a Melbourne man's amputated foot following a September car crash.

An arrest warrant was issued late Friday for Cindy Economou, who was picked up Monday afternoon, said Florida Highway Patrol spokesman Lt. Tim Frith.

Economou was charged with petit theft, a second-degree misdemeanor, Frith told Local 6 News partner Florida Today.

The crash occurred Sept. 19 when Lambert was traveling south on Interstate 95 in Port St. Lucie. His Chevrolet pickup collided with another vehicle, and the pickup flipped, striking a pine tree.

A rescue crew was forced to amputate Lambert's foot in order to extricate him from the truck.

Economou is accused of retrieving the foot from the scene, taking it home and putting it in her freezer, presumably to use in cadaver-dog training that she did outside of her role with the fire department.
