Recession Forces 'Econo-Moms' To Seek Employment

Web Sites Help Women Locate Jobs

Web sites are helping many "econo-moms" -- women entering the workforce because of the recession -- locate jobs.

Kacy McClean is one of the many women trading her play groups for staff meetings, as many families are finding they can no longer afford to allow women to stay at home with children.

"It just killed me every day to leave her, so I started working part time then and staying home with her," said McClean, who quit her previous job shortly after her daughter, Haven, was born.

"The amount of time I've gotten to spend with her has been really, really great, but I feel like we have to be careful financially," Kacy said.

McClean and her husband, who’s an independent contractor, fear his workload will soon drop off., so she has decided to return to work.

"With 82 percent of men being the ones laid off from the workforce, it's now becoming more critical for these moms to go back in order to help their families survive," said Dr. Barbara Seifert, a career counselor who added that employers are embracing "econo-moms."

"They've got mature decision-making skills, multitasking, they have organization and project-management skills, they can manage multiple appointments at one time, they can bring various people together who will complete tasks that they need," Seifert said.

Web sites such as MomCorps.com and YourOnRamp.com are matching "econo-moms" with jobs across the country.

"I signed up with MomCorp a couple of months back, and they've been great about passing along potential opportunities," McClean said.

MomCorps.com said they've matched thousands of women in just the last six months.

McClean said she has not yet found a new job, but is preparing her daughter for it.

"It'll be an adjustment for her not to see me as often as she does," she said.

Seifert said “econo-moms” should think outside the conventional office box and suggested freelancing or becoming a virtual assistant, where people can work from home doing administrative, project managing, and copy editing jobs.

There’s no cost to join MomCorp; businesses pay to list job openings and gain access to the tens of thousands of women who have registered.
