ORLANDO, Fla. -- Some of the foods we once thought were bad for us actually have surprising health benefits.
Sherri Flynt is a registered dietician at the Florida Hospital and she explained why some seemingly bad-for-you foods are actually good for you.
First on Flynt's list: eggs, which she said are good for your eyes.
"There is lutein in eggs that actually helps prevent macular degeneration, which is actually one of the leading causes on legal blindness," Flynt said.
Flynt said dark green vegetables are also good for eyesight.
More surprisingly, coffee may offer health benefits other than just a caffeine jolt.
"One of the more recent health benefits seems to be with Parkinson's disease, that drinking some coffee during the day tends to reduce your risk for Parkinson's disease," Flynt said.
And athletes might be interested to know that according to Flynt, milk is more beneficial after a workout than a sports drink.
"Chocolate milk seems to even be more of a benefit because of the additional sugar that is there. The body seems to absorb that energy more so than from some of the sports drinks, and it is much less expensive," Flynt said.
Flynt noted that you can slow the aging process with what you eat.
"I can't promise you that your wrinkles will disappear but you are healthier, you feel better and I think you look younger," Flynt said.
Flynt said the secret is getting plenty of antioxidants in your diet by eating things like dark fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
As a final tip, Flynt recommended using honey mixed with warm tea or lemon water to ease a sore throat. She said it works just as well as over the counter medication.
