ORLANDO, Fla. -- Trying to quit smoking is a struggle for many Americans and one treatment option claims to help patients quit without medication.
Orlando Company Healing Laser Clinics offers laser therapy intended to help smokers kick the habit.
Local 6 employee Scott Noland, 41, is a heavy smoker.
"I want to quit smoking primarily for my health -- obviously for my family," Noland said.
Noland said he wants to be around as long as possible for his young daughter.
"I've tried gum. I've tried patches. Cold turkey. I've also tried lozenges," Noland said.
Noland signed up for laser therapy after hearing success stories from other people and let Local 6 News reporter Steven Cooper follow his journey.
"What the laser's going to do for you is make you feel calm and relaxed for several days while your body is relaxing, while your body is detoxing," a Healing Laser Clinics employee told Noland.
The clinic said the treatment is similar to acupuncture, but instead of needles, it uses lasers to hit certain trigger points – specifically on the face, ears and hands.
The therapy is designed to release natural endorphins in patient's bodies similar to the way a cigarette does, but naturally.
The procedure takes about 20 minutes and the effects of the treatment should last seven to 14 days.
According to the clinic, when the effects of the treatment wear off, the patient should be detoxed and no longer "chemically connected" to cigarettes.
"You've got to want to quit. If you don’t want to quit, nothing is going to help you quit," a clinic employee said.
The clinic said smokers trying to quit should not be pressured, or they might slip up.
Laser therapists said it is best for people trying to quit to be left alone.
Noland received the treatment in February and he has been cigarette-free since.
The Healing Laser Clinic said it has a 87 percent success rate and that results can be achieved with one or two treatments.
The treatments cost $190 per session.
