TITUSVILLE, Fla. -- The family of a woman who was shot and killed in a hospital parking lot is speaking out against police after the woman's husband was charged with her murder.
Yolanda Garvin-Williams was gunned down in the parking lot of Parrish Medical Center Monday morning.
Garvin-Williams, a mother of four, was a nursing assistant at the hospital. Her father said the police share the blame for his daughter's death.
Garvin-Williams filed a protective order against her estranged husband, Jeremiah Williams, in May, but said her husband threatened she wouldn't live to make it to court. Williams was charged with first-degree murder on Monday in Williams' death.
The protective order was dismissed when Garvin-Williams did not appear at a court hearing. This was not the first domestic violence complaint filed by Garvin-Williams against Williams during their nine-year marriage, but each time, court records show, Garvin-Williams failed to follow through with the complaint.
"He was always acting like he was ready to explode. So, you can't tell what was going through his mind," Garvin-Williams' mother, Marguerite Grant, said.
Titusville police were called to Garvin-Williams' home last week after Williams allegedly beat her, but Williams was gone when police arrived. Police said they couldn't find him and could not obtain a warrant for his arrest because the charges would not justify one.
Garvin-Williams left her husband a month ago, but Titusville police said Williams followed through on his promise that his wife would not live to make it to court. Garvin-Williams' family said Williams continued to harass her and they wonder if she would be alive today if police had arrested him last week.
Williams was apprehended Monday afternoon in Marion County. Deputies said he was driving Garvin-Williams' car and was on his way to Gainesville.
Williams' brother said people should not jump to conclusions, despite what police are saying.
"I know people going to jail, you say different things, but until you're in that position just keep your mouth shut. I mean, it's tough," Williams'' brother said.
Williams was taken to an Ocala hospital after complaining of chest pains. He will taken to the Brevard County Jail Tuesday.
