ORLANDO, Fla. -- A deaf Orlando man was saved from a house fire Monday morning after he was awakened by his service dog, fire officials said.
Dearrin Weaks said his trained dog, Roscoe, awakened him by jumping on the bed at his duplex, located at 34 N. Primrose Drive, which had caught fire.
"My dog woke me up, he saved my life. I'm going to give him a steak tomorrow," Weaks said. "He jumped up on the bed and woke me up because I'm hard of hearing. I'm proud of him."
Weaks said he smelled plastic when he was awakened and realized his neighbor was still inside.
Weaks said he tried to pull the man out of the home, but his neighbor tried to return to save his things.
The neighbor was treated for smoke inhalation.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
