KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- A Central Florida woman has been arrested and charged with setting afire a 4-month-old puppy that later had to be put down, deputies said.
Osceola County sheriff's deputies arrived at a home Tuesday afternoon after the homeowner said his son called and told him the homeowner's girlfriend might have set their puppy, Haze, on fire.
Deputies said the puppy had burns on his paws, stomach, ears and face. The puppy was taken to an animal hospital for treatment, where it had to be euthanized because of its injuries, Osceola County officials said.
The homeowner said his girlfriend, Rachelee Soto, told him she was going to burn the puppy and the house because she was angry with him.
Soto, 31, told deputies the incident was an accident. She said she was smoking in the garage and there might have been motor oil on the ground, which could have sparked a fire.
Deputies said they did not locate any cigarettes.
The dog suffered third-degree burns, which were severe enough for a vet to decide to euthanize the dog.
Soto was charged with animal cruelty and resisting arrest and booked into the Osceola County Jail.
