Swine Flu Cited In Woman's Death

Patient Suffered From Respiratory Problems

A 30-year-old Seminole County woman died of complications from swine flu at Florida Hospital in Altamonte Springs, health officials said.

The woman, whose name has not been released, was admitted to the hospital earlier this month for respiratory problems.

The Department of Health issued a statement Wednesday afternoon confirming that the woman died of complications related to swine flu.

Florida Hospital announced last week that a case of swine flue was confirmed at its Altamonte Springs location.

"The patient was at high risk with complications when admitted for respiratory problems earlier this month and is listed in critical condition," according to a press release issued by the hospital last week.

A spokesman for Florida Hospital said procedures exist to protect its employees and patients from contracting the virus.

During a news conference Wednesday afternoon, a health department official said there is concern that the swine flu will last into the regular flu season.

Meanwhile, the Florida Department of Health on Tuesday confirmed the first case of swine flu at the University of Central Florida.

The student, a 20-year-old undergraduate, has fully recovered, health officials said.

According to UCF, the student exhibited mild flu-like symptoms when he visited the UCF Health Center on Wednesday. A specimen from the student was sent to the state laboratory in Jacksonville, and confirmation of swine flu virus was confirmed on Tuesday.

Another possible case of swine flue at UCF could be confirmed later this week, the school said in a release. The second possible case involves a 20-year-old undergraduate who exhibited mild symptoms when she visited the Health Center last week. She is recovering, school officials said.

The students do not share any classes and live in different off-campus housing. No known connection between the students exists, the school said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Florida had 562 confirmed and probable cases of swine flu as of last week.
