The penalties for running tolls on the Orange County expressways will change effective July 1.
The current system puts points on driver's licenses, or even suspends them, when tolls are run without paying.
The system prompted numerous complaints from drivers with suspended licenses and now the new rules will put a hold on tag renewal.
"I think that's better than the driver's license because a lot of people are more dependent on that," toll road user Thomas Ashworth said.
Drivers who run three tolls in a month will have to pay for the tolls, as well as a fine, before being able to renew their tag.
"I think it's fair. I went through the same when I first moved here and I probably ran through a lot, but if you let people keep going on, and give them a warning, then they are never going to pay," toll road user Yamilee Perez said.
Some still question the policy of automatically penalizing toll runners.
"Technology is fallible, and people relying on technology, especially the toll way authority, that has had numerous problems in the past," toll road user Phil Tripoli said.
If your information is not current with the Department of Motor Vehicles or the Expressway Authority and you run one toll in a month, you will have to pay the tolls back before renewing your registration, similar to a parking ticket.
