Police: Couple Forced Teen To Have Sex

Wife Hid In Closet Before Joining Husband In Battery, Police Say

POSTED: Tuesday, June 30, 2009
UPDATED: 8:49 am EDT July 1, 2009

A Palm Bay husband and wife remain jailed on charges they forced a 17-year-old woman to have sexual relations with them.

Nathan Copeland, 22, and Gertha Freeman, 32, were charged with sexual battery after Palm Bay Police were called to investigate the woman’s allegations against the pair, officials report.

The couple is being held at the Brevard County Detention Center and will have court hearings on the charges in August. Police also carried out a search warrant of the couple's home at 272 High Road last week.

"The 17-year-old was having a (relationship) with the 22-year-old," Yvonne Martinez, spokeswoman for the Palm Bay Police Department, told Local 6 News partner Florida Today.

The teen discovered the marriage and ended the relationship, according to police, who said the wife -- who knew the victim -- went to the woman's home June 22 to talk about the affair.

"(Freeman) then lured her to their house. The victim did not want to go," Martinez said.

Police said Copeland then forced the victim to have sexual relations and was later joined by his wife, who initially hid in the closet.

The victim later contacted police to report the incident.

The couple was arrested last Wednesday and taken to the county jail.
