ORLANDO, Fla. -- A 16-year-old accused of faking a kidnapping spoke exclusively to Local 6 News on Friday, saying she was genuinely threatened and the 911 call she placed was not a hoax, although Orlando police disagree.
The teen, who did not want to be identified, said she was held against her will by three girls who attacked her and a friend in the parking lot of Destiny Nightclub, which was hosting a teen night on Thursday.
"She's coming up with some cockamamie story that she was kidnapped, and we all know it's false," Orlando police Officer Robert Anzeuta said. "Nine different agencies put their lives on the line, going 100 mph down I-4 to catch this car to save a girl we think is being kidnapped, and it ended up being a hoax."
Eight teenagers were questioned by Orlando police officers, who were aided in their manhunt, which ended along U.S. Highway 17-92 in Volusia County, by about 30 officers and two helicopters.
According to police, the 16-year-old first called her mother saying she had been kidnapped, then called 911.
"I felt that I was in danger. I did. I was scared." said the teen, who added that the incident was motivated by jealousy over a boy. "I never get into situations like this."
The girl said she got in the vehicle with the others because she thought they would hurt her if she didn't.
"We're going to file for restitution so that the family of this 16-year-old girl is going to pay the money used to utilize all those agencies and helicopters," Anzeuta said.
"I can't believe they would say something like that because I was threatened, and I told them I was scared and they didn't believe me," the girl said.
Orlando police said the 911 call placed by the girl was not available because of the Fourth of July holiday.
