The World Health Organization confirmed that an outbreak of Ebola in the Congo Republic has killed 64 people.

Ebola Virus

Blood samples drawn from patients in the region tested positive for ebola virus, said Josef Mboussa of the country's Health Ministry.

U.N. health officials confirmed Wednesday that the disease was the ebola virus and warned that the highly lethal hemorrhagic fever could still be spreading, according to a Washington Post report.

Ebola, which is passed on by infected body fluids, kills 50 to 90 percent of its victims through massive internal bleeding, depending on the strain of the disease.

Ebola killed at least 73 people in Congo and Gabon in an outbreak from October 2001 to February 2002. That epidemic was also linked to the consumption of infected primates.
