1431: Nineteen-year-old Joan of Arc, who had claimed divine guidance in leading the French army to several important victories over the English during the Hundred Years' War, is burned at the stake for heresy by an English-dominated tribunal in Rouen, France. Twenty-five years after her execution, a Roman Catholic Church inquisitorial court examined the trial, pronounced her innocent and declared her a martyr. She was canonized as a saint in 1920.
