2 bitten by sharks on Volusia County beaches, officials say

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – Two people were bitten by sharks on Volusia County beaches on Monday, officials said.

Volusia County Beach Safety said the first shark bite was reported just after 2 p.m. at the New Smyrna Beach jetty. A 37-year-old surfer was bitten on the ankle and was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The second shark bite was reported just after 3 p.m. in the 1500 block of the beach at Ponce Inlet. Officials said a 25-year-old was bitten while jumping off his surfboard, and that he was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening lacerations on his foot.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, the red flag was flown due to rough surf, wind and rain, officials said.
