2 elderly women die in hit-and-run

Authorities say driver fled the scene

ORLANDO, Fla. – Two elderly women died Friday night after being hit by a vehicle that fled the scene, according to authorities.

The women, Morelia Arias, 77, and Gerardina Lopez, 82, were killed instantly, authorities said.

Florida Highway Patrol said it happened at Landstar Boulevard and Town Center Boulevard in Orange County.

Carmen Rivera said she came out of her house and saw two women lying on the street.

"It was a loud boom. The sound was strong, very strong," she said.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, a white older-model Honda was heading north on Landstar at about 7:45 p.m. when it hit the women and kept going.

Authorities said the car had a spoiler on the back and blue headlights.

Investigators said they were collecting evidence scattered across the street. They asked for anyone with information to come forward.

"If this was your mother or your sister laying in the road, that somebody left here to die, you'd want somebody to call in that tip," said Sgt. Kim Montes, an FHP spokesperson.

Neighbors told Local 6 people are always walking in the neighborhood, and speeding is a big issue, particularly on Landstar Blvd.

"Honestly, it doesn't make me feel safe at all if it's something so close to my home," said Analicia Castro.
