Volusia deputy injured in crash

HOLLY HILL, Fla. – A couple wanted on attempted murder charges in North Carolina was arrested in Volusia County after a car was stolen at a Holly Hill gas station and was later involved in a crash with a deputy, officials said.

According to Holly Hill police, a woman dropped a man off around 10:45 a.m. Tuesday at the Valero at Nova Road and Flomich Street.  The man, later identified by the Florida Highway Patrol as Jonathan Sweeney, 25, of North Carolina, then stole a Toyota Camry while the vehicle's owner and his son were inside the store, police said.

Deputies were alerted, and the woman's car was located a short time later and she was arrested, officials said.

Volusia County sheriff's Deputy Jordan McDaniel later spotted Sweeney driving the stolen car, which hit a cement bench on 13th Street at a high rate of speed, clipped another vehicle and struck McDaniel's cruiser.  The cruiser was pushed into McDaniel, 36, while he was putting down Stop Sticks, and he was injured, troopers said.

McDaniel, who's worked with the Sheriff's Office for 11 years, was seriously injured and taken to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach.  Sweeney was taken to the same hospital with minor injuries.

Charges are pending against Sweeney.
