The new Brevard County Schools superintendent has only been on the job for a week, but he is already battling with the district's budget crisis.
Brian Binggeli left Fairfax County schools in Virginia, a 160,000-student district, to take up the position of superintendent in Brevard, a 72,000-student district. He was greeted with a New York Times article showcasing Brevard's gutted summer school programs.
"I did see it, you know, quite frankly, the county that came from had to eliminate programs in the summer. This is not unique to Brevard schools," Binggeli said.
Brevard depends heavily on federal stimulus money to keep teachers in the classrooms and that money will run out in two years, but Binggeli said that will not cripple his district.
"Well, I don't know about cripple. I mean, we will function and we will continue to serve our core mission and we will do it well, but it is no different than anybody's household budget, when we have X amount of dollars, we have to prioritize," Binggeli said.
Binggeli said he wants to maintain Brevard's status of spending the highest percentage of money on classrooms than any other district in Central Florida.
"Brevard public schools sits near the very top in percent of dollars spent in the classroom and near the very bottom in percent of dollars spent on administration," Binggeli said.
Binggeli said he hopes his district will not face as many budget cuts as last year. During the 2007-2008 school year Brevard County schools had to cut $130 million.
