MELBOURNE, Fla. -- Four boaters were rescued from the Indian River Lagoon on Monday after they jumped into the water because a swarm of bees infested their boat, officials said.
The Brevard County sheriff's aviation unit spotted the boaters shortly after 1:30 p.m. when callers reported that the foursome was in the river near the Melbourne Causeway.
"They found all four of them. They pretty much drifted along," Melbourne Fire Battalion Chief Frank Avilla told Local 6 News partner Florida Today. "They said there were bees on the boat, enough to make them all jump. It’s a first for me."
The bees apparently came from a hive that was aboard the boat, which was also located, Melbourne fire officials said.
Rescue units from the Melbourne and Indialantic fire departments, Coast Guard and Brevard County Sheriff's Office assisted in the rescue.
No one was injured in the incident.
