ME: Spine Injury Killed Disney Worker

Disney Cast Member Anislav Varbanov Died After Rehearsal

POSTED: Monday, August 17, 2009
UPDATED: 7:33 pm EDT August 18, 2009

For the third time in the last two months, a Walt Disney World employee has died while working at one of the Disney parks.

Anislav Varbanov, 30, a Disney stunt performer who worked on the "Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Show" died from a cervical spine fracture, according to the medical examiner.

Varbanov was injured during a rehearsal, and his death was ruled accidental, the medical examiner said.

Disney issued the following statement after his death:

"We've lost a valued cast member, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and coworkers as we mourn his passing."

The Orange County Sheriff's Office Communication Center received a 911 call from security personnel at the Disney's Hollywood Studios, located at 225 Cypress Drive, at 7:34 p.m. Monday reporting that a Disney cast member had suffered a head injury during the rehearsal.

Local 6 News has learned that Varbanov was injured while attempting a tumbling roll.

A Disney spokesperson said a tumbling roll is when a performer jumps in the air, dives over another performer and then tucks and rolls onto a mat. Disney said the performance has gone on without incident thousands of times.

Deputies and forensics specialists responded to the scene and are conducting a death investigation.

Varbanov was rushed to Florida Hospital Celebration Health with serious injuries. Medical personnel were trying to stabilize him and planned to transport him to Orlando Regional Medical Center, but he did not survive. He was pronounced dead at about 8:53 p.m.

The woman seen performing with Varbanov in a YouTube video said the two had known each other for 15 years and he just began working at Disney two weeks ago.

She said they were both members of the Bulgarian International Sports Acrobatic Team and they performed together at the Pirate's Dinner Theater Attraction, where the YouTube video was taken, until Varbanov left to work at Disney.

The Occupational Health and Safety Administration has been notified of Varbanov's death, which marks the second Disney performer to die from injuries sustained while performing within a week. A Disney monorail pilot also died in a crash near the Magic Kingdom last month.

Disney said performances of the show were suspended on Tuesday in honor of Varbanov.
