One of the Navy's most technologically advanced guided missile destroyers sailed into Port Canaveral Friday.

The USS Mason, the Navy's newest ship, cruised into port past Jetty Park in what will likely be the public's best opportunity to see the vessel, according to WKMG News partner Florida Today.

"Residents will really want to see this ship," said John Porter, commissioning committee John Porter told Florida Today. "I think with what's going on people will want to get a chance to welcome the crew. I think this is an opportunity to thank them."

Members of the Cape Canaveral Council of the Navy League will be at Jetty Park Friday at 9 a.m. with flags and banners to welcome the ship. They are encouraging others to do the same.

"We're trying to assemble as many people as we can with the red, white and blue to welcome the ship," said Kurt Ronstrom, president of the Cape Canaveral chapter of the Navy League. "We're going to try to have some banners out there."

The Canaveral Port Authority is waiving the $3-per-vehicle parking fee between 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Friday for people who want to see the ship coming into port, according to the report. The ship is expected in about 9:30 a.m.

More than 4,000 people have been invited to the ceremony, among them legislative and civic leaders. The private event will be held April 12 at the Navy's Trident Pier at Port Canaveral, across the channel from Jetty Park. It is not open to the public.

The Mason carries an array of advanced weaponry, including the Aegis anti-air warfare missile system, the Tomahawk land attack missile being used in Iraq, and an advanced anti-submarine detection system. It also carries two helicopters.

The ship, which will be based at Norfolk, Va., is 510-foot long, has a crew of 346 and can reach speeds of more then 30 knots, which is about 35 mph.
