Police: Father Left Baby On Sidewalk

Emotional Dad Not Charged After Strangers Find Baby

POSTED: Wednesday, September 16, 2009
UPDATED: 6:46 am EDT September 17, 2009

A horrified and very emotional father is relieved that his baby, found alone by strangers on Wednesday in downtown Winter Park, is OK.

New details reveal that the baby was left behind on New England Street as the boy's father simply forgot him, Local 6 News reported.

Local 6 News helicopter Sky 6 was over the scene as soon as the baby was found and captured an emotional reunion as the father realized on camera what he had done.

The baby was found in the middle of the sidewalk. He was in a stroller and very happy, but there was no parent to be found for quite some time, Local 6 News reported.

It turns out that his dad actually drove away without him, Local 6 News reported.

Local 6 employee Yolanda Vegas-Nelson was on her way to dinner when she discovered the baby. Sky 6 was overhead when a crowd started to gather around the stroller as the infant was found.

“How could you forget a baby in a stroller? It wasn't in a car seat. It was in a big, old stroller,” Vegas-Nelson said.

She called police immediately, snapped a few cell phone pictures, and waited with the smiling, healthy-looking infant. Within 20 minutes, Sky 6 captured the baby's father running up frantically to find police and emergency crews at the scene.

“He says, ‘I forgot the baby.’ He says he was three-quarters of the way home and he realized there was no noise in the back of the car and that is when he realized the baby was missing,” Vegas-Nelson said.

A passer-by gave him a hug as he broke down.

“He says, ‘I'm so sorry.’ He says, ‘My wife is at the spa,’ and he took them to Azalea Park and he honestly forgot the baby,” Vegas-Nelson said.

Police decided not to charge the father with child neglect and let him go home.

“You could tell he was scared. How could he forget the baby?” Vegas-Nelson said.

Local 6 News spoke to the father, who would not go on camera. He said it was simply an accident.

He said he was only a few blocks away, but witnesses said the baby was out there for at least 20 minutes.

Local 6 is not naming the father since he was not charged with any crime.

When asked whether they would consider filing charges against the father, Winter Park police said it is up to the officer's discretion based on the situation, including how long the child was left, and the parent's reaction.
