HOWEY IN THE HILLS, Fla. -- Nearly half the students at a small Lake County school stayed home on Wednesday amid swine flu concerns.
According to the Lake County School Board, there were at least 20 students with flu-like symptoms at Lake Hills School in Howey in the Hills. The school board said 72 of the school's 163 students stayed home on Wednesday and several left early.
The health department sent a letter home to parents on Tuesday, warning them of a possible swine flu outbreak. It is not known if all the students who stayed home on Wednesday are sick, or if they were kept home as a precaution.
Twenty staff members stayed home on Wednesday as well.
The Lake Hills School is a special needs school. Many of its students have compromised immune systems.
No cases of swine flu have been confirmed at the school and the Lake County Health Department said it will not be testing for the virus.
