COCOA, Fla. -- A 26-year-old Cocoa man remains jailed after being arrested Saturday on suspicion of repeatedly strangling a woman before sexually battering her.
Nelson Alexander Umana, of Cocoa, was charged with sexual battery, battery and false imprisonment after the woman created a diversion and escaped a residence in the 1400 block of West Peachtree Street to contact Brevard County sheriff’s deputies, reports show.
Brevard County sheriff’s investigators said Umana attacked the woman in a locked room of his West Peachtree residence, Local 6 News partner Florida Today reported.
Investigators said Umana pulled the woman by the hair and then locked her in a room where he choked her repeatedly over the course of an hour before sexually battering her, officials reported.
The woman managed to escape the residence and was later spotted on the street in her undergarments, officials reported.
Investigators also reported that the suspect had known the woman for at least a year.
Umana, who is being held on a $215,000 bond at the Brevard County Detention Center in Sharpes, will have an Oct. 15 hearing on the charges. Umana is also being held on an immigration-related issue.
