Smoke Shuts Down Disney Monorail

Electrical Short Forces Power To Be Cut; No Injuries

UPDATED: 6:50 pm EDT September 30, 2009

A Disney monorail train was stopped Tuesday morning after an electrical short caused smoke in the control tower of the Magic Kingdom monorail station.

According to Reedy Creek Emergency Services, workers shut off power as soon as they saw the smoke, which also cut off power to the monorail beam, causing a train to stop. Emergency services said a safety measure would have killed the power, but workers saw the smoke first and manually shut down power.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office was called to the monorail station just after 10 a.m. and turned it over to Reedy Creek.

Only one train was affected. Guests on the train had to wait for a tractor to pull it into the station, emergency services said, but there was no danger to the guests or the monorail.

The monorail for the Magic Kingdom Express and resort line are still not operating, but the Epcot line is, Disney said Wednesday night.

Emergency services said this is the first time they have seen this specific issue, but it is not uncommon for an electrical panel to short out.

A monorail pilot was killed in July when two trains collided near the Transportation and Ticket Center.
