KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- A man has been arrested on suspicion of giving painkillers to Central Florida high school football players.
Thomas Rome, 36, of Kissimmee, was arrested Thursday on charges of armed trafficking in hydrocodone over 14 grams, trafficking in hydrocodone over 14 grams, delivery of controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a school and delivery of a controlled substance.
According to the Osceola County Sheriff's Office, an investigation began when a school resource officer at Gateway High School in Kissimmee received information that Rome had provided a student with a "blue pill," later identified as Vicodin.
Agents contacted the student, who said he was talking to Rome about being in pain after a football game on Sept. 16, according to the sheriff's office. The student told deputies that Rome then went to his truck and returned with a handful of Vicodin pills, which he gave to the student.
Agents spoke with another student who said he had a similar conversation with Rome after another football game on Sept. 11. Rome also provided him Vicodin pills, deputies said.
Agents conducted a controlled phone call with Rome who agreed to come to Gateway High School to provide one of the students with more pills and he was taken into custody.
There was a handgun and 26 Vicodin pills in his vehicle at the time of his arrest, deputies said.
Rome was taken to the Osceola County Jail with no bond.
