PATRICK AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- A 12-year-old boy suffered a suspected shark bite to his upper left leg while surfing Friday at Patrick Air Force base's north beach, according to a report.
The boy was apparently bitten just before 9 a.m. near the base's main entrance gate.
Patrick emergency personnel who were called to help the victim described his injuries as "superficial lacerations," Patrick spokeswoman Capt. Susan Romano told WKMG-TV partner
Florida Today. "He was conscious the whole time our guys were working on him."
Witnesses at the beach Friday reportedly said that the boy had several bites on his legs.
"He had two good marks on the side of his leg, right above the knee," Matt Adams of Orlando told
Florida Today. "We were going surfing," he said. "I don't know if we're going now."
The boy was transported to Cape Canaveral Hospital in Cocoa Beach for treatment.
The beach remained open after the suspected bite, Romano said.
If confirmed as a shark bite, it would be the second this week in Brevard County.
Tuesday, a 20-year old tourist from Venezuela was swimming in Cocoa Beach when he suffered a bite 6 inches to 8 inches in diameter just below his left knee.
He was treated and released the same day from Cape Canaveral Hospital.
