DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Daytona Beach police chief Mike Chitwood is firing back against allegations that statements he made after a fight on the campus of Bethune-Cookman University were racial in nature.
Chitwood's statements come after the Florida chapter of the NAACP called on the justice department to investigate the police department's handling of the incident.
Chitwood said his main concern when the fight broke out at one of the school's dorms was keeping students safe. He said any allegations that the situation was blown out of proportion by the police department are wrong, and he has video to prove it.
"If the attorney general were to elect, or if anyone were to elect to do an investigation, my door is wide open. I'll have the coffee pot on. We have nothing to hide here," Chitwood said.
The NAACP alleged that Chitwood's comments after last week's fight were "racially tinged."
"I didn’t know that words like 'melee,' 'free for all,' and 'getting a subpoena for records,' were racist," Chitwood said.
Students fought in the school's Bronson Hall last week after someone set off a sprinkler inside a dorm. Five people were injured in the brawl and two university employees were fired for their involvement in the fight.
"If there are incidents in there that I need to investigate, to eradicate the knuckleheads that are there committing crimes, that's what we're going to do. And if Bethune-Cookman doesn't like it, and the president doesn't like it, I don't know what to say. Maybe she should have been out there in the midst of this melee, and taking charge of this, instead of sitting in her office, and criticizing the police," Chitwood said.
Chitwood said the school wanted to control what he said to reporters after the fight. He plans to release video from the scene on Thursday.
