LEESBURG, Fla. -- A Central Florida doctor has been arrested and charged with hiring someone to kill his former business partner, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office said.
Major Crimes detectives have arrested Dr. Akram Ismail and charged him with solicitation to commit murder and other charges.
Detectives said they received “credible information that Dr. Ismail hired two individuals to physically injure and kill” Dr. Nehme Gabriel.
The gastroenterologist reportedly paid one person $40,000 to break the victim’s legs and publicly discredit him, police said.
Investigators said he paid another person $25,000 to kill the victim.
Ismail was taken into custody after witnesses came forward and a warrant was issued for his arrest, police said.
Local 6 News reported that Ismail has three offices across Lake County, including one in Leesburg on County Road 44.
According to court papers, Ismail wanted the would-be hit men to blow up Gabriel’s office, hire females to embarrass and sexually exploit him and cut off his hands and nose.
Ismail is expected to appear in court Monday to find out if he will be issued bond.
Local 6 News reported that Ismail had also been arrested on drunken driving charges in 2004.
