An Osceola County School Board member who will be deployed to Kuwait in January in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom will continue his term with the board via video and teleconferencing.

Julius Melendez, a combat medic and sergeant in the Florida National Guard with the 53rd IBCT, will provide medical support to troops, among other duties.

Melendez will begin training at Camp Blanding later this month.

Melendez will continue his term as an Osceola County School Board Member, to which he was first elected in 2008. Technology, such as video conferencing and teleconferencing, will be utilized to enable Melendez to participate in board meetings while serving overseas.
