ORLANDO, Fla. -- Within hours of accepting applications in Orlando on Monday, more than twice as many people have requested assistance for the Christmas season from the Salvation Army than all of last year.
A long line of people were attempting to apply in person Monday morning at the Salvation Army's Orange County office, located at 416 W. Colonial Drive.
Some people got up at the crack of dawn to line up in the hopes of providing their kids with Christmas gifts.
"It's going to be a long holiday. Right now, you're trying to get food for them, you're trying to get clothes for them, you're trying to make things better for the house. So, it's going to be hard," mother Joyce White said.
The Salvation Army's Angel Tree program places Christmas trees in heavily trafficked areas at workplaces. Cards with names and desired gifts are placed on the tree, and people take names from the trees to buy gifts for the kids.
The Salvation Army said it enlisted the help of extra volunteers to handle the growing crowd, but the real need is for people within the community to make donations. The organization said the poor economy has made it more difficult to get donations.
