Mother Cleared In Son-For-Sale Case

Truck Driver Says Woman Wanted $10 For 6-Year-Old Boy

POSTED: Thursday, October 29, 2009

Prosecutors have dropped charges against a 37-year-old Melbourne woman accused of trying to sell her 6-year-old son to a tow truck driver in exchange for $10 in gas money.

Police last month arrested Marcy Pappalardo on one count of child neglect after following up on a tip from the truck driver, who said Pappalardo was in the car next to him at a stoplight near a U.S. 1 gas station when she made the offer.

Authorities said the man rolled up his window and followed Pappalardo until they arrived at the gas station, Local 6 News partner Florida Today reported.

Pappalardo denied the allegations, and a passenger in her car claimed the driver made up the story because Pappalardo turned down sexual advances, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors decided there was no serious intent on Pappalardo's part to sell the boy, Assistant State Attorney Julia Lynch said.

Child neglect is a third-degree felony punishable by up to five years in prison.

"What it comes down to is it was inappropriate remarks that were made at a traffic light, regardless of who said them," Lynch said. "You don't have this woman making any serious steps toward really trying to carry this act out."
