Authorities have identified an 8-year-old boy who was hit and killed by an SUV after leaving a Halloween event Saturday night.

Mitchell Trompeter was walking home from the First United Methodist Church in Clermont with his father's girlfriend, Kathleen Berry, after a trick-or-treat party when he was hit, police said.

"I've been crying. I can't eat. I can't sleep," Mitchell's father, Joe Trompeter said. "This mountain is so high, all I can do is offer it up to the Lord because I can't handle it."

The party was held in a parking lot, away from busy streets.

Mitchell and Berry, 49, were jaywalking across Colonial Drive, police said.

Berry, who was also hit, was not seriously hurt.

Teddy bears have been left in Mitchell's memory at the crash site. The boy attended Clermont Elementary School and grief counselors are available at the school.

"I'm going to use every day for the rest of my life to think about Mitchell and what kind of person he was, and if I can impact any people, I will, because I certainly want to be up there in heaven with him," Trumpeter said.

No charges have been filed against the driver, Augustin Perez, 61.

Trumpeter said he holds no ill will for Perez.

"He's probably feeling like I'm feeling right now, just horrible. I'd love to give him a hug and say, 'Listen up, you know, let it go. It happened. There is nothing we can to do to bring Mitti back," Trumpeter said.
