DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- A Daytona Beach hospital has agreed to a $200,000 settlement with the widow of a man strangled by a fellow psychiatric patient.
Jimmie Lee Douglas was asleep two years ago when was attacked and choked with a bedsheet. He was 64 years old.
John Hill claimed voices told him Douglas was evil and should be killed. The 21-year-old was found was not guilty by reason of insanity and ordered into a psychiatric facility.
But a state investigation faulted Halifax Health for inadequate supervision, given Hill's previous threats. The hospital was ordered to install video cameras, upgrade intercoms and hire more staff.
Elizabeth Douglas filed her lawsuit last week, and court documents show the case was settled a day later.
