WINTER GARDEN, Fla. -- Newly released information reveals that Tuesday's shooting in Winter Garden occurred after a family was held hostage at gunpoint for days inside their own home and forced to withdraw more than $20,000.
Winter Garden police on Wednesday arrested a third man in the incident, which began on Sunday in the gated community of Lake Roberts Landing. Police said the search for a woman who possibly masterminded the plot is ongoing.
Oscar Diaz-Hernandez, 19, of Orlando, was arrested after a five-hour interrogation on charges of kidnapping, robbery and attempted murder. Miguel Diaz Santiz, 25, and Victor Manuel Sanchez, 20, both of Apopka, were arrested Tuesday on the same charges.
"The female suspect is still at large. She made the comment, '(The woman being held hostage has) seen me, now we have to kill her,'" Winter Garden police Lt. Keith Ralston said.
Rubens Morais, 48, president of RLM Trucks Carrier, and Marcela Borges, 27, along with their 5-year-old son answered a knock at the door of their 3,700-square-foot house on Sunday when the armed intruders forced their way in, police said.
The gates to the community were open the morning of the incident, police said.
According to the arrest affidavit released by the Orange County Jail, on Tuesday, Borges was able to tear the mask off one of her kidnappers and then jumped out a second-story window when her captors threatened to kill her. She was shot in the back while running away, the affidavit said.
"(The family is) telling us they were blindfolded, bound and gagged," Ralston said.
"For three days?" Local 6 News reporter Erik von Ancken asked.
"Three days," Ralston said.
Police believe a gunman armed with an assault rifle is still on the run.
While being held, the family was taken to a house in Apopka, where they spent the night, the affidavit said. The captors then took the family to a bank where they were forced to withdraw $23,600 and then brought them back to their Winter Garden home, the affidavit said.
Borges is recovering at Orlando Regional Medical Center. Morais, who was struck on the head with a blunt object, was not seriously hurt. The boy was not injured.
