ORLANDO, Fla. -- Deadly hit-and-run crashes are on the rise in Central Florida and one victim's family is speaking out.
On Wednesday alone, the Florida Highway Patrol responded to 19 hit-and-runs. Fortunately, none of those were fatal, but in this month alone, FHP has seen five hit-and-run fatalities.
On Saturday at the intersection of Pine Hills Road and Highway 50 a driver struck and killed 23-year-old Leahann Delaney without ever stopping.
Matthew Martin witnessed the crash and stopped to help.
"There's a girl, probably 18 to 20 years old, blond hair, lying in the middle of the road. She has blood coming out of her head," Martin told a 911 dispatcher
Cathy and Dennis Delaney are speaking out to remind people that Leahann was not a nameless victim, she is their daughter.
"You know, when you hit a freaking squirrel – this was my daughter. She's a human being. You can't tell me you didn't see her in your headlights," Cathy Delaney said.
The Delaneys are not alone in their grief. There have been 13 fatal hit-and-runs in Central Florida so far this year. Eight in Orange County, three in Volusia County and one each in Lake and Osceola counties.
