Burke Pleads Guilty To Animal Cruelty

Orlando Talk Show Host Fired After Shooting

POSTED: Friday, November 20, 2009
UPDATED: 10:05 pm EST November 20, 2009

Former radio host Shannon Burke may be returning home after a shooting that injured his wife and her dog.

Months after the shooting, Burke, 44, of Altamonte Springs, pleaded guilty to a lesser felony charge of cruelty to animals after the judge dropped restrictions against him. He was sentenced to six months in the Seminole County Jail for the cruelty to animals charge and 60 days for the gun charge, which will run concurrent with the six-month sentence.

Burke's sentence will begin Dec. 31, and he was also sentenced to 30 months of probation, which will begin after his time in jail.

Other conditions of Burke's sentence include continuing treatment with a mental health professional, no alcohol consumption, 100 hours of community service at an animal shelter, no firearms and no unconsented contact with his wife, Catherine Burke.

Burke could have faced 20 years behind bars if he had been convicted on the original charges that resulted after police said he shot his wife's dog, Charlotte, and the same bullet grazed his wife's head. His wife's testimony, however, lead to the plea deal.

After healing, Catherine Burke received stitches and spoke with Local 6 about the incident, saying her husband shot her and the dog in a drunken rage.

"Unfortunately, it was not an accident," she said.

Catherine Burke filed for divorce shortly after the April incident, but the couple has since reconciled.

Catherine Burke told the court the shooting was an accident, and the state's case against her husband began to falter.

Burke also pleaded guilty to using a firearm while under the influence of alcohol, which is a misdemeanor.

Catherine Burke declined comment when approached by Local 6 on Friday afternoon.
