MOUNT DORA, Fla. -- A Central Florida councilman's wife and others boxed in a vehicle after the vehicle's occupants allegedly stole campaign signs from yards.
Charges are pending against Christine Harper, 45, of Tavares, and Kalei Morgan, 41, of Mount Dora, after they were questioned and released by Mount Dora police.
According to police, Mount Dora Councilman Jim Yatsuk has reported over the last five weeks that his campaign signs were being stolen. Yatsuk estimated that about 50 signs are missing.
The Mount Dora Police Department on Sunday afternoon received several calls from citizens, including the councilman's wife, Andrea Yatsuk, reporting that campaign signs were being stolen.
Police said the witnesses reported that two women in a black PT Cruiser were removing Yatsuk’s campaign signs from yards throughout the Mount Dora.
Andrea Yatsuk, along with several others, followed the vehicle until it turned into a driveway on Kay Court and Hilltop Drive, police said. The group boxed in the PT Cruiser and called police, who then questioned the women.
The women do not live or have any known connection to the residents of the driveway where they stopped, police said.
Police said the PT Cruiser was found with its top down and a large Yatsuk campaign sign sticking out of the vehicle. Thirteen smaller signs were in the back seat, police said.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
