LAKE COUNTY, Fla. -- A pickup crashed into a tractor-trailer in Lake County Monday morning after the driver ran through a stop sign because of fog, and flames from the accident forced officials to close the Florida Turnpike.
The Chevrolet pickup, driven by Daniel Davis, 65, of Montverde, was traveling northbound on county Road 561A when it struck the tractor-trailer, which jackknifed and caught fire, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Davis was issued a citation for failing to stop at the stop sign.
Flames reached the Florida Turnpike overpass above the crash, causing damage to the structure, troopers said. The truck was carrying aerosol cans, which fueled the fire, FHP said.
The Department of Transportation is assessing the heat damage to the bridge.
The northbound lanes of the turnpike have been closed in the area, and the stretch could remain closed for days, depending on the extent of damage to the overpass, troopers said. Southbound lanes have been reopened.
Drivers traveling northbound will be detoured off the turnpike at state Road 50 to U.S. Highway 27 north, which reconnects with the turnpike.
Willie Finn, of Lady Lake, the driver of the tractor-trailer, was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center and was listed in serious but stable condition. The driver of the pickup was treated at the scene and released.
Charges against Davis are pending, according to the FHP.
