An 18-year-old who unsuccessfully tried to jump into a pool from the roof of a five-story condominium has been charged with trespassing.

The Sarasota Surf and Racquet Club filed the trespassing charge against Paul Smith on Monday. Charges were also filed against two other teens who were successful in their attempts to make the jump, which some - including Smith's mother, Janet Stone - believe was an imitation of stunts seen on the television show "Jackass."

Smith broke both legs and an ankle, fractured his pelvis and an arm when he landed on the concrete surrounding the pool at the Sarasota club. He will require a lengthy rehabilitation, relatives said.

Officials at the racquet club said Smith and his friends had no legal reason to be on the club's property.

One of Smith's friends was videotaping the failed jump. Other actions caught on that tape include scenes of a boy running through Sarasota Square Mall in a one-piece women's bathing suit and jumping from a building into a tall bush.

Similar stunts were glorified on the now-defunct MTV show "Jackass." Smith and the other teens involved in the jumping incident maintain they were not imitating anything and were merely thrill-seeking.
