PALM BAY, Fla. -- A 31-year-old woman was arrested Tuesday after 17 animals -- including two dead hamsters -- were found abandoned inside a Palm Bay home, which reeked of animal feces, officials said.
Christine Hogle was arrested on animal cruelty charges at a home located on Coconut Palm Drive Tuesday morning after authorities received a call from a concerned neighbor.
Animal waste and garbage covered the floor of the home in the Palm Bay Colony mobile home park.
“I think it’s horrible, just simply horrible,” Jim Naylor, Hogle's neighbor, said.
Patrol officers performing a well-being check were unable to get inside the house because of several aggressive dogs, police said.
Animal Control officers were called to remove the dogs, and officers then searched the home, finding eight cats, five dogs, a rabbit, a lizard and the two dead hamsters.
Nearly every room of the house was soaked with urine and covered with trash and animal feces, police said. The animals also appeared to be in distress.
"The conditions inside this home are absolutely disgusting," Palm Bay police officer Chris Richards said. "It is the worst I've seen."
According to neighbors, the homeowner left in early December to visit family and friends in New York for several months and asked Hogle, her granddaughter, to care for the property and the animals.
“I’ve seen the grandmother walk those dogs and I know she cared for them,” Naylor said.
Only two of the dogs are the grandmother’s. All the other pets are Hogle’s.
"She told us she went to the property four times a week to clean," said Palm Bay police Sgt. Steve Shytle. "Obviously there is no indication of that, and she was not able to explain why the animals and the home were in such poor condition."
The animals were taken to the South Brevard Animal Shelter for treatment.
Christine Hogle is charged with 17 counts of animal cruelty.
