FLAGLER BEACH, Fla. -- A pod of endangered whales, some of which may have been calving, was spotted Friday off Flagler Beach.
Local 6 viewers first reported seeing about 12 right whales Friday morning, and Sky 6 reporter David Sprung later spotted the whales near the Flagler Beach Pier.
Drivers along state Road A1A pulled over to watch the whales.
Right whales are large baleen whales, and adults are typically between 45 and 55 feet long and weigh up to 140,000 pounds.
Females give birth to their first calf at an average age of 9 to 10 years. In the coastal waters off Georgia and Florida, calving occurs from December through March. Calves are about 15 feet long at birth.
"This has just been the best day. We just sat there and watched them, it's fantastic," a whale watcher said.
It is believed that there are only about 400 North Atlantic right whales.
