Deputies Kill Pit Bull That Mauled Boy

3-Year-Old Taken To Arnold Palmer Hospital In Orlando

POSTED: Monday, February 8, 2010
UPDATED: 6:46 pm EST February 8, 2010

Orange County sheriff's deputies shot
and killed a pit bull that attacked a 3-year-old boy who was playing with his father in a back yard, according to authorities.

The incident happened Monday morning at a home in the 2700 block of Coral Reef Drive in east Orange County, south of the University of Central Florida.

The child, who was bitten several times on the face, was taken to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, Orange County fire officials said. He was released Monday evening with bandages on his head. He is expected to be OK.

The child's father, who was also bitten in the attack, said the stray dog "came out of nowhere" and attacked the 3-year-old, according to deputies.

The child's grandfather said the father was actually caring for the dog, however, and he had told his son to get rid of the dangerous dog. The grandfather said the dog belongs to a friend of the father.

The grandfather has kicked his son out of the house over the incident.

Deputies tried to corner the dog but had to shoot it when it charged at them, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

The dog will be tested for rabies.
