Marion County sheriff's deputies
on Thursday are searching for two people who stole nearly $13,000 worth of cigarettes from a gas station convenience store.

Deputies released surveillance video of the heist that happened on Tuesday at Murphy USA located at Southeast 17790 109th Terrace Road in Summerfield.

The video shows a man removing boxes of cigarettes, worth $12,720, from a storeroom and loading them into a minivan -- while employees were on duty. Investigators said the employees were not suspicious because they thought the man was a vendor.

The man was wearing black shoes, blue jeans, a black shirt and a baseball cap, and he was carrying some sort of prying device, the video shows.

As the man pries the door open, a second man wearing white tennis shoes, khaki pants, a black jacket and a white shirt gets out of the vehicle and purchases a pack of gum inside the store.

The van is believed to be a red, late-model Chrysler.

The manager of the gas station said the same kind of distraction theft happened at a gas station in Punta Gorda. Deputies do not have any evidence that the two incidents are connected.

Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers at 352-386-STOP.
