County To Workers: Take Out Own Trash

Move To Save County More Than $400,000

In an effort to spare some of its dwindling funds, a local county will begin requiring workers to empty their own garbage cans.

According to a memo circulated among Brevard County employees, janitorial service will no longer include trash emptying effective April 5.

"Office staff will empty their own trash into communal waste receptacles located conveniently in each office suite, making sure food and/or containers are not left in office areas overnight," the memo, issued by the assistant county manager, said.

The move will save the county an estimated $408,000, the memo said.

"The new janitorial scope of work will deliver an acceptable minimum level of service to meet health and safety standards," the memo said. "In this economy, facilities has little option but to adapt these common sense solutions to maintain clean buildings, present a good image to our public and reserve available funds for more critical needs."
