Milton Caraballo Among 21 Employees Under Investigation

OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. -- One of the 21 jail employees under investigation after an inmate escaped resigned suddenly on Friday night.
Former corrections officer Milton Caraballo gave no reason for his resignation, but Local 6 learned that he was among others accused of violating policies that authorities said resulted in the inmate's escape.
Last month, police said inmate Michael Rigby dug a hole behind his jail cell toilet and escaped to freedom.
Investigators said they believe Rigby -- who was awaiting trial for attempted murder -- is now likely out of the state.
On the night of the escape, Caraballo was among a team of employees who were present during a search of Rigby's cell. According to investigators, Rigby and his cellmate were allowed to remain in the cell during the inspection, which is a violation of jail policy.
During that search, investigators said Rigby sat on the toilet that was covering his escape hole and was never ordered to move away.
Investigators determined that Caraballo did not properly conduct the cell search. He and 20 other coworkers were awaiting a possible disciplinary action.
The discipline was expected to be announced Friday but has been postponed until the investigation is complete.
Although jail officials said Caraballo went against policy, the report from investigators said other employees broke more -- and more severe -- rules.
Caraballo is the only corrections officer to resign so far.
