SCOTTSMOOR, Fla. -- A 40-acre brush fire burned within about 100 feet of 19 homes on Palm Avenue in the Scottsmoor area on Sunday night.
No structures were reported damaged, but three homes were evacuated.
By Monday afternoon, crews had drawn fire lines and were working to keep the fire from flaring back up.
Firefighters continued to mop up the fire, between Palm Avenue and April Lane, as swirling winds threatened to rekindle the blaze.
By about 4 p.m. Sunday, smoke had temporarily shut down a section of road near the 4900 block of U.S. 1.
Because of poor visibility, authorities had planned Sunday night to close U.S. 1 in both directions, from Aurantia Road to Golden Shores Boulevard.
Several fire departments, including Brevard Fire-Rescue, Titusville, Kennedy Space Center, Cocoa and Volusia County, responded to stamp down the flames before high winds could carry the blaze into homes.
Flames at one point raged within 75 to 100 feet of about 15 houses on Palm, Paradise said.
Fire officials have yet to determine the cause of the fire, which looked to originate off April Lane, according to Paradise.
"Right now we're leaving it as unknown," he said.
Paradise said residents' landscaping helped prevent any structure fires.
"They had their lawns well manicured and brush cut well back from their places," he said. "You don't find that very often."
